Chapter 16

I slept in Kalon’s arms as I had done with Ronric. It was comforting and just felt right to sleep snuggled with both of them. It took a while for me to fall asleep, even though it felt like the most natural thing to be doing, because this whole situation was just strange. I had lost control with Ronric and I lost control with Kalon and almost made him my mate. Would the same thing happen when Rainer got back?

When I finally woke up, I was still alone with Kalon, but he had made me breakfast. Like Ronric in Turkey, he brought it to me in bed.

“I had an email from Zimin’s team while you were sleeping. They want me to come in for an interview in five days, but it’s hush-hush. I’ve got no idea if I’m meeting with Zimin, an assistant, this warlock we’re hunting, or what.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t go. We know nothing about the warlock helping Zimin. What if it’s him? He’ll know you’re a vampire.”

“It’ll be the last thing he realizes before I kill him. I’ll know there’s a warlock in the room before I enter by listening for heartbeats. Covens have strong magic, but they don’t have speed or strength.”

“Kalon, you know better than anyone if you go into battle thinking you’ve already won, you’re definitely going to lose.”

“I will not lose because I have something to fight for. I will not be careless. We’ll finally find this pesky warlock creating wars and the coven will be punished.”

“Maybe Ronric will be back by then and know who the warlock is,” I suggested.

“No. This warlock is crafty. Ronric is not the only one who has been hunting the magic left behind. This warlock is never anywhere a Lycan can catch his scent, I could hear his heartbeat, and he’s always long gone by the time we zero in on the dictator.”

“Do you think it’s a witch or warlock playing both sides? They know when to leave because they know when you’re moving in.”

“It’s possible. Or they are using spells to see our moves.”

“Then they know we’re here already, don’t they?”

Kalon just laughed. “The Infinity Coven put protections on you almost as soon as you were born. You were cleaned off, handed to your mother and father, then almost immediately passed to Rainer’s mother. You can’t be tracked by magic or spells and I think they put every single protection spell possible on you.”

Another secret I hadn’t been told. I didn’t need to be getting mad about that right now. That worked to my advantage. “Maybe I should be the one checking out the warlock since I have all these protections.”

“Dragoste, Rainer put all the same protections on us when Zimin came to power. We were all working together when your mother called. It was very odd. Like fate put the three of us together on this mission so your mother didn’t have to track us all down.”

“Forgive me for thinking fate has a sick sense of humor given the current situation.
